What is Saxenda?
Saxenda is a treatment licenced specifically for weight loss in the UK. It is only available in an injectable form containing the active drug liraglutide.
The manufacturer of Saxenda is Novo Nordisk, they have released a specialised tool called weight journey, to help patients using Saxenda to achieve their weight loss goals.
In the UK, obesity is an increasing health issue. The statistics show around two-thirds of UK adults are either overweight or obese. Obesity increases the risk factors for serious health complications such as heart diseases, hypertension, type 2 diabetes, stroke, high cholesterol, osteoarthritis, sleep apnoea, and also increases the mortality from some cancers. Aside from the physical complications, there are also psychological complications to consider such as low confidence, low mood and general lack of motivation.
Can I use Saxenda?
Saxenda has guidance that it should only be prescribed for patients who are clinically obese. This is determined using the Body max index calculation.
The BMI (body mass index) formula is used to decide whether someone is underweight, normal weight or overweight. There are 2 methods to calculate this:
- Using metric measurements; taking a person’s weight in kilograms, then dividing this by their height in metres squared.
- Using imperial measurements; taking a person’s weight in pounds, then dividing this by their height in inches squared; then multiplying the result by 703.
When you have your results, you can then categorise the body mass using the following guide:
- 18.5 or less is classed as underweight
- Between 18.5 and 25 indicates a healthy weight
- Over 25 is classed as overweight
- Over 30 is considered as obese
However, the BMI calculation is not a 100% decider for weight classification, as there are some well-recognised disadvantages to the BMI model (for example, it cannot make a differentiation between fat and muscle, and therefore cannot determine a person’s body fat percentage). But still, it is helpful as a general weight indicator and is widely used in the NHS as a clinical tool to help doctors determine their patient's weight levels.
Saxenda is licensed for use in those with a BMI of:
- 30 or over
- 27 or over where weight-related risk factors are also present such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart disease, type 2 diabetes
What else will help my weight loss goals?
The ideal goal for an overweight or obese patient should be to reduce their risk of developing the illnesses that we discussed earlier. Thus losing weight slowly but surely is the best way, as it will stay off for longer rather than trying to go hungry and seeing short term gains. In almost all cases a diet with rapid weight loss will usually be followed by weight gain just as fast. A lifestyle change towards diet and exercise is the goal of any successful weight loss plan, as this change can be maintained even after the weight loss.
Some people find it difficult to lose weight through diet and exercise alone, there are many different factors related to this, whether its work, stress, education, hectic lifestyle, in these cases prescribing medicine to help these patients achieve their weight loss goals would be beneficial. It is important to note, the medicine would be in addition to the healthy lifestyle changes (reduced calorie diet and exercise).
So how does Saxenda work?
Saxenda is an easy to use injection, which is taken daily. The active drug inside Saxenda is called Liraglutide. Liraglutide belongs to a class of drugs known as the GLP 1 agonists. This drug is special as it mimics a hormone the body naturally produces called GLP 1.
What is the GLP 1 hormone
GLP 1 is a glucagon-like peptide hormone that is released in the intestine after eating. As the body consumes food, the release of this GLP 1 hormone increases and it begins to circulate into the blood.
It makes its way to the pancreas where it has a few important functions:
- Stimulates the production of insulin - Increased insulin means more glucose is being taken up by the cells, this lowers your bloodglucose, reducing the risks of type 2 diabetes
- Suppresses the production of Glucagon - Glucagon usually breaks down glycogen into glucose, which increases blood glucose levels, GLP 1 slows down this process.
- Reduces gastric emptying - slows down the stomach contents being passed along the intestines, this means you stayfuller for longer and controls the appetite
Saxenda mimics the GLP 1 peptide hormone, giving you all the benefits of the naturally produced hormone, just by injecting a daily dose of the medicine.

Direct causes (Behavioral causes)
High Caloric Diet
This is the most important single cause for obesity. You should know weight loss depends mainly on following the right diet, to which you can add other options like weight loss medications. Eating much sweets, fats and snacks, nibbling between meals, having soft drinks regularly, relying on fast foods, and evening overeating are all examples of high caloric, unhealthy diets. Following a healthy diet for long enough time is the most guaranteed way to work for weight loss. However, if you did that and it showed fewer results than expected or it took forever for you to lose a few kilograms, then you adding other options like weight loss medications should be considered.
Adding Orlistat or Xenical (lowers fat absorption significantly) to your diet will make you lose most of the fats you eat in the stool, which means most calories from fat will not be counted
Obesity increases with sedentary life and inactivity. Studies have shown that exercise increases metabolic rate for the following 24 hours, especially with aerobic exercises. However, as mentioned, weight loss depends mostly on diet. Exercising for 30 minutes will burn fewer calories than the calories in a fizzy drinks can. Another fact is that cardio exercising makes you hungry, and makes it more difficult for you to follow your weight loss diet. Therefore, the best way to go is to follow a healthy diet, in addition to taking Orlistat or Xenical weight loss medications to aid weight loss and prevent regain of the weight you lose.
