Do I need to lose weight?

When your caloric intake is more than your bodily requirements, the excess calories are converted into fat, which is stored in fatty storage areas in hips, buttock, belly, etc. Around 1 in 4 adults in UK are obese. You are considered obese when your body weight is higher than what is considered healthy for your height.

Calculate your BMI

Using what is called BMI (Body Mass Index), you can determine whether you are overweight, obese, or normal.

BMI = Weight (Kg) / Height (m2)

  • Normal - If your BMI is between 18.5 – 25 then you are normal
  • Overweight - if between 25 – 30 then you are overweight
  • Obese - If your BMI is over 30 then you are obese.

For example, if you weigh 80 Kgs and your height is 1.75 m, then your body mass index equals 80 Kg / 1.75m / 1.75m = 26.1, which is overweight (falls between 25 and 30).

How does weight affect your body?

Being overweight does not only negatively affect your body appearance from a cosmetic point of view but also increases the possibility of developing chronic health diseases. Obesity is an escalating epidemic health issue that substantially raises the risk for different diseases like hypertension, diabetes type 2, stroke, heart disease, and even cancer.

Worry not, even the slightest reduction in your body weight has a significant positive effect on your general health and substantially lowers obesity-related health issues.

Being overweight or obese affects your body appearance and raises the risk of chronic diseases. Even the slightest reduction in your body weight improves your appearance and reduces the negative health effects resulting from obesity. Dietary changes mixed with physical activity, aided by weight loss medications ( when needed ), will help you reduce your weight to normal or near-normal levels.

Direct causes (Behavioral causes)

High Caloric Diet

This is the most important single cause for obesity. You should know weight loss depends mainly on following the right diet, to which you can add other options like weight loss medications. Eating much sweets, fats and snacks, nibbling between meals, having soft drinks regularly, relying on fast foods, and evening overeating are all examples of high caloric, unhealthy diets. Following a healthy diet for long enough time is the most guaranteed way to work for weight loss. However, if you did that and it showed fewer results than expected or it took forever for you to lose a few kilograms, then you adding other options like weight loss medications should be considered.

Adding Orlistat or Xenical (lowers fat absorption significantly) to your diet will make you lose most of the fats you eat in the stool, which means most calories from fat will not be counted

Physical inactivity

Obesity increases with sedentary life and inactivity. Studies have shown that exercise increases metabolic rate for the following 24 hours, especially with aerobic exercises. However, as mentioned, weight loss depends mostly on diet. Exercising for 30 minutes will burn fewer calories than the calories in a fizzy drinks can. Another fact is that cardio exercising makes you hungry, and makes it more difficult for you to follow your weight loss diet. Therefore, the best way to go is to follow a healthy diet, in addition to taking Orlistat or Xenical weight loss medications to aid weight loss and prevent regain of the weight you lose.

Exercise for weight loss

Let's first be clear about one thing – exercising does little for weight loss; weight loss is all about diet. Exercising has uncountable health benefits, but weight loss is not one of them. When you do cardio for weight loss, you will burn some calories, which are far less than what you will eat for the whole day as a result of feeling 'hungry' because of cardio. You can check this later for more details.

What is the best way to lose weight?

So, what is the best way to lose weight?

Weight loss is all about following a low-calorie diet and being more active (by being more active, walking or doing just aerobic exercising like cycling.) If you have tried this and still struggling with weight loss, then there are other options to consider.

Medications for weight loss

Oral weight loss medications, including Orlistat and Xenical, act through inhibiting lipase enzyme. Lipase is the enzyme that digests the fats in your diet. Inhibiting lipase means the fat you eat will be excreted in stool, and will not be stored in your hips, buttocks or belly.

Many of us struggle with maintaining their progress. In addition to helping you lose weight through lowering fat absorption, Xenical and Orlistat weight loss medications can keep you from gaining back the weight you have lost.

Risk factors

Until recently, obesity was linked only to adapting sedentary (lazy) lifestyle and excessive consumption of calories. Today, these two direct causes of obesity are still considered significant, but scientists have highlighted other significant risk factors that play a key role in obesity.

First, let's discuss the 'risk factors' that make someone more prone to become obese or overweight than another. These risk factors include:

Genetic Factors

Our genes play a very prominent role in determining our tendency to be obese, overweight, normal weight, or underweight.  It is estimated that between 40% - 70% of obesity cases are attributed to genetic factors only, not to environmental factors or lifestyle.

For instance, studies on adopted children have shown that the BMI (obesity index) of these adopted children follows the BMI of their biological parents, not the adoptive ones. Furthermore, studies on identical twins who live separately show that each identical twin tends to have close BMI to each other's, regardless of where they live.

What is my Basal Metabolic Rate (metabolism rate)

BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate) is the rate at which your body utilizes fat and other fuels for energy for basic body functions like breathing, adjusting body temperature, and pumping blood by the heart. It is true that if you have "slow metabolism", then you can get fat easily. And yes, you can blame your genes for that.

Obesity can occur at any age. However, childhood obesity is predictive to adulthood obesity later in life. Individuals who were obese as children find it harder to lower their body weights as adults, compared to others who were of normal weights as children. This is because fat cells are permanent – once a fat cell is formed, it persists for life.

Both sexes are equal in terms of obesity. However, pregnancy increases the mother's weight by 4-6 pounds over her before pregnancy weight. In addition, menopause causes extra weight gain and redistribution of fat towards belly.

External risk factors

  • Work problem or unemployment
  • Family lifestyle
  • Feeding pattern
  • Depression or other psychological factors

  • Does Orlistat have side effects?

A drug with no side effects is a drug with no effects. However, if you take Orlistat as prescribed, then you are unlikely to experience any side effects from Orlistat or Xenical.

Since Orlistat significantly lowers fat absorption, you should make sure that no more than 30% of your caloric intake comes from fat; otherwise, your daily caloric intake will be too low.

Moreover, you might need to take A, D, E, and K multivitamins (ADEK), since these vitamins need fat to be absorbed.

  • When to expect Orlistat to show results?

You should start seeing results within 2 weeks after taking Orlistat or Xenical.

If you have type 2 diabetes, then it might take longer for Orlistat to show results.

  • How to take Orlistat?

You can take Orlistat just before, during, or within 1 hour after a meal that contains fat.

If all your 3 main meals contain fat, then you should take Orlistat 3 times daily.

Orlistat is taken by mouth with a glass of water or any liquid.

  • Exercising alone can help me lose weight … Is it correct?

Wrong! Exercising will help you build muscles and improve your health generally, and will boost your basal metabolic rate but for a limited percentage.

Although exercising makes your body looks fitter from a cosmetic perspective, exercising can cause you to gain weight through building muscles.

Losing weight is all about following a low-caloric diet, to which weight loss medications can be added to reach better results.

  • What is the difference between a healthy food and a low-caloric food?

A healthy food is the one that contains vitamins, minerals, anti-oxidants, and other elements needed by your body, contains no excess sugars or saturated fats, and do not necessarily contain low calories.

Avocado is an example of a healthy food that is rich in unsaturated healthy fats, but contains high calories.

Candies is an example of unhealthy food that contain excess sugar, while relatively low in calories.

To lose weight and stay healthy, you should eat healthy foods that are low in calories.
