Finasteride is a generic medication of the famous brand, Propecia which is used to treat men with male pattern hair loss through the same way of Propecia. The most common type of hair loss is male pattern hair loss which affects one-third of men at the age of 30 and half of all men at the age of 40.
Finasteride works by blocking the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT) hormone, reduction of DHT level in the scalp and your body leads to increase hair growth on the scalp and slow further hair loss.

What is Finasteride?

Finasteride is the generic version of Propecia and is used to treat male pattern baldness. Male pattern baldness is the most common type of hair loss, affecting two-thirds of men before the age of 35, and is treatable in 95% of cases.

Finasteride works by blocking the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT) hormone, which leads to increased hair growth on the scalp and slower hair loss.

For optimal effect, Finasteride should be taken once a day for 3 to 6 months. This treatment is available in 1mg tablets.

What is Male Pattern Baldness?

Male pattern hair loss, or male pattern baldness, is usually genetically inherited and involves the increased sensitivity if the scalp hair follicles to male hormones. This sensitivity towards testosterone causes hair follicles to become smaller, shorter and lighter in color until they stop producing hair.

Directions for use

  • To gain the significant effect of Finasteride with the least side effects, you have to follow the correct way of intake with the continuous course. You need to read the instructions of the patient information leaflet before
  • The correct dose of Finasteride 1mg is one tablet once a day.
  • Take the dose of Finasteride with water and with or without food
  • You should store Finasteride in a safe place, away from the children and at the temperature of the room.
  • To gain the full effect of Finasteride, you need to take it for 3-6 months.
  • In case of missing your dose, skip it and get back on your normal does the next day. Be aware that additional dose does not make additional benefits.
  • You may lose your hair again within 9-12 months if you stop taking Finasteride.
  • For more instructions, you can read the patient information leaflet which is supplied with the medicine. You should read it before use.

  • Is hair loss reversible? Alternatively, is hair loss permanent?

Hair loss is "controllable". This means you can use treatments like Propecia
(Finasteride) to stop further hair loss and restore hair regrowth.
However, if hair loss is caused by other factors that lead to scarring (e.g. exposure to heat
trauma), then hair loss will be permanent, and hair transplantation will be the way to go.

  • Does hair gel or spray cause hair loss?

As long as you buy them from trusted shops and use them as instructed, you are all good.
However, excessive application of hair gel or spray, or using unknown products can
    sometimes cause hair loss.

  • Do hats cause baldness?

Whatever you wear on you head has nothing to do with you experiencing hair loss.

  • Is there a cure for baldness?

There is no 'cure' for diabetes, but diabetes is a very 'treatable' health condition.
In the same way, there is no 'cure' for baldness, but hair loss can be 'treated' and slowed
    down using medications like Propecia

  • Is it true that if I pluck one grey hair and two grow back?

In one word, "NO!" You can pluck all grey hairs there, and no more than 1/1 will grow

  • Hair loss is my mother's genes to blame, is this true?

This is partly correct and partly wrong. Although the main baldness gene is inherited from
your mother's side, baldness occurs due to a combination of several genes inherited from
both sides and is not attributed to just one gene.

  • Is it true that if I use Propecia my hair will become 'addicted' to it?

Propecia takes around 3-6 months to give results, and results will be visible for up to 5

However, since Propecia is a 'treatment' for hair loss and not a 'cure' as discussed before,
if you stop using it, conversion of Testosterone to DHT will resume, which means hair loss
will occur again within 6-12 months.

Is my Hair loss genetic?

Specific "balding genes" control hair loss/hair thinning in both men and women. However, the
way these gene functions are different in men from women.

When a male with these balding genes (or at least some of these genes) becomes prone to develop baldness, a female with these genes experiences hair thinning only and never alopecia (baldness).
In men, balding genes act by conversion of the masculine hormone "Testosterone" into another
hormone "Dihydrotestosterone - DHT", and this is where Propecia (Finasteride) saves the day.

Hormone affecting hair loss

DHT hormone weakens your hair follicle, making them shrink and atrophy. This negatively affects
the rate of hair regrowth, lowers hair density and strength, and finally causes hair thinning / hair

How does Finasteride/Propecia work?

Finasteride | Propecia is hair loss treatment that works by breaking this process of "Testosterone – DHT – Hair loss" in the most effective way. Propecia hair loss treatment prevents the conversion of Testosterone into DHT, which means no further damage to hair follicles.

Although hair loss, hair thinning, hair falling, alopecia, baldness, etc., all can be the results from a combination of multiple factors and not just a single one. Still, the genetic factor is the most common and most significant single factor to cause hair loss in men.

Thyroid regulation

Thyroid problems can also cause hair thinning or loss in both males and females.

Non-genetic causes of hair loss include:

Drug intake (iatrogenic factors)

Some medical conditions can cause hair thinning. However, the medications for these conditions, rather than the conditions themselves, is what causes hair loss.
These medications include medications for:

  • Depression
  • High blood pressure
  • Heart problems
  • Gout
  • Arthritis
  • Cancer

If you are using any of these medications, you might need to consult your doctor for changing them or for adding anti-hair loss treatments to your regimen.

Unknown (idiopathic)

In some cases of non-androgenic hair loss, the cause of hair loss may not be clear, even with thorough testing and investigations by your doctor. In such case, your doctor will prescribe you Propecia and/or Minoxidil, since many cases respond to these common anti-hair loss treatments.

Use of Harmful hair care preparations

Most of us use hair care products in their different forms, including:

  • Hair dyes
  • Luster products
  • Shampoo
  • Products for hairstyling (in which your hair is pulled straight)
  • Hot hair oils.

If these products are tested, prepared and produced by a trusted manufacturer, and are used according to instructions, then they are unlikely to cause hair loss.
However, if you use unknown products with harmful preparations, or you use hair care products more frequently than you should, then it is possible to weaken your hair and affect the rate of hair regrowth, and thus causing hair thinning/hair loss.
